IEC Code Registration: How to Get an IEC Code?

The IEC code registration process is as follows: 

Register on the DGFT website: Visit the DGFT website, click Services > IEC Profile Management > Apply for IEC > Register. Enter details, verify with OTP, and set up your password. 

Login and start filling out the application form: Use your credentials to log in, then click Apply for IEC > Start Fresh Application. 

Fill in the required details: Enter your personal information, business details, bank information, and director/partner details. 

Sign and pay fees: Review the application summary, sign using a digital token or Aadhaar, and pay Rs 500 through the Bharatkosh payment gateway

Download IEC: Once approved, download your IEC certificate from the DGFT website using the Print IEC option or check your email

What is IEC Code Validity? 

An IEC code has lifetime validity but requires mandatory annual updates. These updates must be completed between April and June, with June 30th being the final deadline. Even if there are no changes to your IEC details, you must confirm your application status online during this period. Failing to complete the annual update can result in IEC deactivation, preventing you from conducting import or export activities. 

How to activate IEC Code?

To renew or activate your IEC code every year, follow the below-mentioned steps: 

  • Access the official website of  DGFT and select the IEC profile management option from the services list 
  • From the new page, click on the update IEC option and log in with your valid credentials 
  • Click the Update/Modified IEC option. Now, a tab will pop up that will show your IEC code details 
  • If there is nothing to change, then save every head of information or edit the information if you want to change 
  • At the end of the process, check the application summary and submit it. To submit the summary, attach the DSC of the registered person
  • After a successful update, the supplied IEC will be reactivated, and the revised status will be submitted to the Customs system

IEC Code Documents: What Documents Are Required for IEC Code Registration? 

Here are the required documents for the IEC application:

  • Identity and business proof: PAN Card, TAN (if applicable), and Certificate of Incorporation or relevant registration documents for your business type.
  • Personal ID for business owners: Any one of these: Voter ID, Aadhaar card, or Passport copy.
  • Address verification: Business address proof like sales deed, rent agreement, lease deed, utility bills, MoU, or partnership deed. Note: If address proof isn't in the applicant's name, a NOC from the owner is needed.
  • Bank details: A cancelled cheque from your business current account or a bank certificate.
  • Mailing and signature requirements: Self-addressed envelope for receiving the certificate by post. Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) or Aadhaar for submission.

  • New IEC Code registration fees: ₹ 500 - can be paid online using credit/debit cards, UPI, or net banking

  • Complete the captcha verification to ensure that you are not a bot, then click on the Submit button.
  • After successful submission of your GSTIN, you will be prompted to enter your ICEGATE ID
  • An OTP (One-Time Password) will be sent to your registered and valid mobile number. Enter this OTP in the provided field
  • After entering the OTP, click on the Submit button to complete the linking process.
